With other people, I can tell, esp if they are both into it. But how do I tell the dif between a friendly straight girl and a flirty gay/bi/whatever one? I live in a smallish conservativish town, too. Gay wasteland! I don't even know what I'm doing.

Ohhh my.  So we have some things in common, dear.  Although I’m not flirting-challenged, I have a hard time telling if girls are flirting with me and I lived in a conservative small town for 14 years so I completely know what you’re talking about.

Personally, there’s really only one way for me to tell if someone is gay or straight.  If we’re having a conversation, I usually bring up my girlfriend in it and see how she reacts.  If she’s cool with it, smiles, and brings up her girlfriend- BATTA BING, you have your answer.  HOWEVER, if she backs off and starts acting a little strange, she’s probably straight.

Another way is just straight up asking. Although this may be more out there and just bold, it’s just another way.  I don’t condemn this way especially because I know how it is to live in a small town, it doesn’t go well.
